Group Movement Lessons

"I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand."
- Confucius

During his career, Dr. Feldenkrais developed thousands of movement lessons which he called Awareness Through Movement® lessons (ATM). Based on his work and 25 years of her own experience and understanding, Anat Baniel created Transformational Movement Lessonssm (TML).

Awareness Through Movement® and Transformational Movement Lessonssm involve sophisticated movement sequences which access the sensory motor processes of the brain and involve attention, perception, imagination and cognition.

Please wear loose comfortable clothing (no jeans please) and bring a towel or blanket. Group lessons may be done seated, lying or standing.

Guidelines for ATM® or TMLsm lessons:

  1. Begin by making slow small movements!
Awareness is amplified by slowing down and doing less.
  2. Stay within your personal range of comfort.
Notice even the smallest discomfort. As you repeat each movement,
search for your own easiest most comfortable path of motion.
  3. Once you find comfort in small movements slowly begin to make larger and quicker ones.
  4. Don't compare yourself to others, learn to listen to your own best and easiest way to move.
  5. If you feel pain:
Do less or slow down even more -
If that doesn't help stop and Imagine doing the movement softly and easily.
Do the movement on the other side instead.
  6. Rest often, not because you are tired but in order to notice any small differences in the way that you stand, lie or sit.

Learn to be your own best bio-feedback. Become aware of your own preferences. Make informed choices based on what lights you up!

Anat Baniel had the unique opportunity to train and work closely with Moshe Feldenkrais for many years. Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais devoted his life to understanding how humans learn and develop and to creating a concrete way of helping those who were trying to overcome limitations. Recognizing his brilliance, Anat committed her life, first to learning what she could from him and then to bringing his work to the world.

For years, Anat Baniel has continued to explore the same themes that Dr. Feldenkrais brought to clarity, searching for a greater understanding of human learning and development, and a better ability to help children with special needs reach their full potential. She is a world-renowned expert in working with children and in training practitioners to achieve the same transformational results. The Anat Baniel Method for Children! gives children an opportunity to develop beyond normal expectations in a way that no other therapeutic technique has achieved.

Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) was a distinguished scientist, physicist and engineer. His insights contributed to the development of a new field of somatic education based on his knowledge of the relationship between bodily movement and the ways we think, feel and learn.

His work took two directions: Awareness Through Movement® or verbally guided group movement lessons; and Functional Integration®, one-on-one lessons which may include guided active movement or gentle passive movement lessons. Due to his work countless people have been helped in many parts of the world.

"...The body reflects attitudes of the mind, improve the function of the body and you must improve the state of the mind."

"...What I'm after isn't flexible bodies, but flexible minds. What I'm after is to restore each person to their human dignity."

"Nothing is permanent about our behaviour patterns except our belief that they are so."
